A new independent publisher is to champion books written by men, and I have nothing snarky to say about that. It is undeniably true that literary fiction is now dominated by women, both on the bookshelves and behind the scenes (78 per cent of editorial roles in publishing are held by women). Jude Cook, the writer and critic who is launching Conduit Books, says he wants to give a platform to “overlooked narratives” by and about men.

If I had a terrible secret, you know who I wouldn’t tell? A man. They mean well, poor things, but they leak like Thames Water. Don’t take it from me: this is official MI5 guidance. Or at least it was in 1945, when Charles Henry Maxwell Knight – the spymaster thought to have inspired “M” in the James Bond books – recommended that the secret services should employ more women.
