How do you describe a mountain – something too big to look at all in one go? Do you focus on the peaks and crags, the way it drops off only to pick up somewhere else? Or on lines and shadows stretching messily across the landscape over which it towers? Perhaps it’s not about the mountain itself, but the life systems it supports, the birds, mammals, humans that make their home in its folds.

Not infrequently this summer have I been in a group of friends—at a barbecue, by the beach, at the pub—when one has turned to the group and said something along the lines of: ‘god, guys, we’ve really got to appreciate this while we’ve got it.’ This is both in reference to the beautiful, perfect moment we are all sat together sharing, but also more broadly, in reference to the fact that a big group of friends currently live within a 5-minute radius of each other.

I bought a jumper recently in a charity shop with a St George’s cross on it. Not from any particularly patriotic feeling, which I’ve never had, but more because the jumper is a hundred percent cotton, thickly woven, very oversized, and was the exact kind of jumper that I had been looking for. I tried it on in the shop and grimaced slightly at the cross, but blurred my eyes in the mirror and the colours were beautiful. Dark claret, off white, deep navy.

A few floors above the billows of grill smoke and car exhaust fumes that waft above the busy street, I am trying to grow a garden. A small one, in a few different window boxes. Propagated supermarket herbs are my main crop, though I have a few cuttings from S who works at a fancy nursery. A few weeks ago, he gave me some eucalyptus seeds that he picked up on a walk.
