He shouted for help and was able to get the attention of bystanders on the beach, which included his father and Keeper R.L. Westcott from the Kitty Hawk Coast Guard station. The two men hurried to secure another rowboat but by the time they reach Orville, he’d sunk below the surface.

Every year in November, Cape Hatteras Elementary School (CHES) students bring in handfuls of spare change, bills, and checks in order to raise money for the Hatteras Island Cancer Foundation, and in 2024, the students came together to raise a staggering $3,225.52 for their local friends and neighbors.

From SamWalkerOBXNews.comA Hatteras Island man already facing numerous charges, including counts for leading authorities on a vehicle chase in July, has been charged with additional felonies for allegedly filing a fraudulent insurance claim on a capsized sailboat. According to a North Carolina Department of Insurance news release, George Thomas King, 60, of Salvo, was arrested Wednesday for felony insurance fraud and felony attempting to obtain property by false pretense.

Published 7:44 am Wednesday, November 27, 2024 By Jen CarlsonOn December 30, 1917, the Caffey’s Inlet Coast Guard Station crew assisted a stranded tugboat, Pampa, during a snowstorm. By using the breeches buoy, three men were brought off the vessel to send telegrams. The CICGS crew then ran lines for the tug and continued to stand by on the beach during the night in case further assistance was needed.

The Hatteras Village Christmas Parade is celebrating its 33rd year in 2024, and the annual event will be held on Saturday, December 14, at 2:00 p.m.This year, the parade will have a revised route in order to work around the closure of Slash Creek Bridge on N.C. Highway 12, which is undergoing a months-long replacement project. “We have actually been looking at this for months, in anticipation of the closure,” said Karla Jarvis of the Hatteras Village Civic Association.

A Coastal Flood Advisory is in effect from 4:00 p.m. on Friday, November 22, to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 23, according to an update from the National Weather Service Newport/Morehead City office. A Gale Warning and Small Craft Advisory have also been issued. The advisory is due to the potential of soundside flooding from Duck to Hatteras Village, including Roanoke Island.
