This is the fifth time I’ve compiled this list. I don’t remember my motivations back in 2020. Perhaps I wanted to be a good, cis ally and honor authors I admire. Maybe I wanted to fill an end-of-the-year roundup call from wonderful CHIRB editors. Or, possibly, I wanted to highlight underrepresented voices. Perhaps. Maybe. Possibly. Whatever the reason, as I built that list of 18 authors after enduring months of COVID-19’s total isolation, I felt my whole world shift. It cracked me open.

Caro De Robertis tells stories of survival. They write of freedom, belonging, and the complexity of human connection—and in the case of their newest novel, The Palace of Eros, divine connection. This lyrical, evocative retelling of the myth of Psyche and Eros is at once intimate and expansive in De Robertis’ masterful hands. Eros is a nonbinary goddess who rescues the beautiful Psyche from Aphrodite’s wrath and hides her in a palace built just for her. Their love is electric.

Every year this list gets longer and my heart grows right along with it. I’m ending 2023 filled to the brim with gratitude for the books that made me feel seen; for who I’ve been, who I am, and who I dream of being. I’m also blown away by the talent exhibited by this year’s debut authors. They have created worlds and bridges. They have dreamed up bittersweet futures. They hope and want and fear and love.
