This is the fifth time I’ve compiled this list. I don’t remember my motivations back in 2020. Perhaps I wanted to be a good, cis ally and honor authors I admire. Maybe I wanted to fill an end-of-the-year roundup call from wonderful CHIRB editors. Or, possibly, I wanted to highlight underrepresented voices. Perhaps. Maybe. Possibly. Whatever the reason, as I built that list of 18 authors after enduring months of COVID-19’s total isolation, I felt my whole world shift. It cracked me open.

Every year this list gets longer and my heart grows right along with it. I’m ending 2023 filled to the brim with gratitude for the books that made me feel seen; for who I’ve been, who I am, and who I dream of being. I’m also blown away by the talent exhibited by this year’s debut authors. They have created worlds and bridges. They have dreamed up bittersweet futures. They hope and want and fear and love.

A novel playlist is a very serious thing. While I draft, I curate mine obsessively because I know I’ll need it. Each song is a portal to a memory or an emotion, and listening to the right one at the right time can inspire me in a way nothing else can. Finding a song that feels worthy of The Playlist is an electrifying, satisfying experience.
