One of the hardest things about finding a restaurant or snack shop you love is knowing it probably won't be around for many years. It's a pretty difficult time to be a retailer. While many are still catching their breath from the confusion and upheaval caused by the covid pandemic, changes just keep coming. It may not seem like a very good time to be any kind of retailer right now. Malls continue to see foot traffic dwindle. Restaurants are closing at an impressive clip. And discount retailers are struggling to maintain profits. And it's pretty hard to stay afloat when you're getting pressure from both sides of the business.

In this increasingly multifaceted era of retail, it can be difficult for many companies to figure out their identity. Thanks to the rise of online shopping, many previously in-person legacy retailers are trying to ramp up their e-commerce capabilities. Sometimes it works. In Target's case, for example, a slow but deliberate investment in its online capabilities gave way to the successful Target Circle 360 program, its paid-membership version of Amazon Prime.

These days, performing in the retail space can feel like an uphill battle. On the one hand, it might feel like no matter what you do, customers are never impressed. Related: Popular Mexican chain closing all restaurants, no bankruptcyAfter all, it is hard to compete with some of the largest retailers, like Amazon, Walmart, and Target. These days, the retail industry is pretty much unrecognizable compared to what it used to look like. Consider what the average American's shopping experience looked like a couple of decades ago. Let's say you needed to buy a few things for your annual weekend of spring cleaning. You'd probably need to visit a big box store for things like a mop, wipes, cleaning solution, and sponges.

There's something very unique — and very American — about walking into a drugstore. Anybody who's ever traveled abroad will tell you that our pharmaceutical retail experience is quite different from most others around the world. In Europe, for example, many drugstores are simply that. They dispense prescription drugs and a few personal essentials closely correlated to health care, like over-the-counter medications and hygiene products. European pharmacies tend to be much smaller, too.
