Bacterial communities varied between lentic and lotic environments and among bone sample types. Accurate PMSI models for 0–4500 ADD were constructed using bone surface swabs. Benthic substrate bacteria likely influence the external community structure of swabbed bones. Bone surface swabbing provides a highly replicable method for microbial succession and PMSI studies.
