BOONE, N.C. - When Helene ripped through the mountains in North Carolina, more than 73,000 homes were damaged or destroyed and more than 100 people died. Many students in western North Carolina missed a month or more of classes as communities started the recovery process. While classes weren't in session, there was still a lot of work being done at schools in Watauga County. Green Valley Elementary School and Watauga High School became distribution centers for the community.

Wednesday, dubbed “Liberation Day” by President Donald Trump, saw the announcement of new tariffs on foreign automobiles and other goods. He implemented a 10% baseline tariff on most imports, although this increased substantially for countries with higher tariffs against the United States. Stocks plunged on the news Thursday. An investment adviser says tariffs on this scale can be jarring, and while financial forecasting is proving difficult for many now, focus on what you can control.
