For the sixth consecutive year, Nova Scotia has the highest university undergraduate tuition fees in Canada, according to a recent report. Statistics Canada reported in September that Nova Scotia’s undergraduate tuition fees reached $9,762 for the 2024-2025 school year, 33 per cent above the national average of $7,360. The two major sources of revenue for public universities are tuition fees and the provincial operating grant.

Polls are open across Halifax Regional Municipality until 7 p.m.Election officials will begin to count paper ballots once polls close. Mayor Mike Savage is not running for re-election, meaning Halifax will have a new mayor by the end of the night. About 25 per cent of eligible voters cast ballots at the advanced polls this year, using new electronic kiosks and an online voting option.

Several hundred people gathered on Saturday, March 2 in Victoria Park clutching signs and flags to call for a ceasefire and protest Israel’s bombings and attacks in Gaza. On Oct. 7, 2023, the Palestinian militant group Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel by land, sea and air. Israel attacked Gaza in retaliation, forcibly displacing 1.9 million civilians, according to the UN. Israel’s attacks on Gaza are ongoing as the UN and people around the world call for a ceasefire.

The #1792 Project: 15 Ships to Sierra Leone partnered with the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic to display a collection of letters written by community members to long-deceased Black Loyalists. Organizers and educators Karen Hudson and Kathrin Winkler gave a presentation on the project at the Maritime Museum on Tuesday, Feb. 27, while attendees sat listening in the shadows of real sailboats. The project started when Winkler met Hudson and asked her if she would write a letter to the Black Loyalists.
