    I’ve been thinking about roots lately. It’s partly because I’ve been gardening & partly because I recently attended the dedication of a historical marker, commemorating a town that no longer exits. I attended because my husband and I both have deep family roots in Fussville, a never-incorporated community that began as a settlement of German Catholic farmers. His dad grew up there, as did his dad’s dad and his dad’s dad’s dad before that.

Her mother died of Alzheimer's disease, so when Pomeroy, a registered nurse, heard female doctors discussing the role hormones may play in supporting brain health, she decided it was time to check her hormone levels. Pomeroy, 72, started hormone therapy in her early 50s. She hoped a hormone test would help her health care providers tailor her treatment. But her doctor "wasn't into it," Pomeroy says.

    Last Thursday, my youngest son came <this close> to driving into a tornado. We knew bad weather was headed our way. Storms, potentially strong ones, had been predicted & everything — the skies, updated weather reports — supported that prediction. We all expected strong thunderstorms; we did not expect a tornado.

    I didn’t want to write about sperm racing. Sperm racing, to me, represents what’s wrong with American culture - while also telling us a lot about what’s going on with boys & men. Which is why I’m writing about it, despite my deep desire to not give these guys any additional attention. In case you missed it, a 17-year-old boy spearheaded a sperm racing contest that made headlines.

His university’s technology transfer office wasn’t interested in his proposed nasal septal stapler because someone had previously patented a similar idea. But, Dr. Gonzales knew there were no devices for nasal septal stapling available to otolaryngologists. “No stapler was on the market,” he said, “because the original device that was patented didn’t work.
