The term manifesto has taken on a negative tinge in recent years, thanks to the hate-filled documents left behind by terrorists and mass shooters. But before the Unabomber (and others) used the word ‘manifesto’ to describe their often angry writings, the word itself wasn’t associated with hate or violence. From the 1900s through to the 1990s, a manifesto was understood to be a public declaration of beliefs or intentions, often associated with political, artistic, or philosophical movements.

World of Warcraft (WOW) helped Alfred Jay Iloreta, MD, become a better head and neck surgeon. Like many current physicians (and med students), Dr. Iloreta grew up playing video games. First-person shooter games were among his favorites. He also loved complex strategy games, like WOW, a massive multiplayer online role-playing video game, and Civilization, a turn-based adventure where players lead a civilization from ancient times to the modern era through exploration, diplomacy, and conquest.

I’ve been thinking about roots lately. It’s partly because I’ve been gardening & partly because I recently attended the dedication of a historical marker, commemorating a town that no longer exits. I attended because my husband and I both have deep family roots in Fussville, a never-incorporated community that began as a settlement of German Catholic farmers. His dad grew up there, as did his dad’s dad and his dad’s dad’s dad before that.

June Pomeroy is determined to do everything she can to live a long, healthy life. Her mother died of Alzheimer's disease, so when Pomeroy, a registered nurse, heard female doctors discussing the role hormones may play in supporting brain health, she decided it was time to check her hormone levels. Pomeroy, 72, started hormone therapy in her early 50s. She hoped a hormone test would help her health care providers tailor her treatment. But her doctor "wasn't into it," Pomeroy says.
