    Investors fled to the relative safe haven of regulated utility stocks on Thursday as major stock indexes dropped as much as 5%. Shares of National Grid jumped more than 5%, while shares of companies including Duke Energy, Southern Company, American Electric Power, Exelon and NextEra Energy, which owns Florida Power & Light, were up around 1% to 2%. Regulated utilities often outperform during tumultuous times because of their stable business model and ability to pass costs along to rate payers.
