President Joe Biden announced a conversion device, like a Glock switch, was recovered at the crime scene where 21 people were shot . Birmingham Police believe fully automatic weapons were used during the shooting. Conversion devices fit onto semi-automatic weapons and allow them to fire at the rate of a machine gun.

WALKER COUNTY, Ala. (WBRC/Gray News) - A former corrections officer has formally pleaded guilty in the death investigation of Tony Mitchell in the Walker County Jail. Joshua Jones, 25, pleaded guilty to deprivation of civil rights under the color of law and conspiracy in the ongoing investigation into Mitchell’s death inside the Walker County Jail. WBRC reports inside the federal hearing Tuesday, Jones took full responsibility, confidently entering a guilty plea in both counts.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - Former state representative John Rogers was sentenced to 13 months in prison and to repay nearly $200,000 in stolen tax dollars. Rogers represented Jefferson County in Alabama Legislature for more than 40 years. He was forced to resign as part of his plea agreement in early 2024. That plea agreement proposed Rogers serve 14 months of home confinement due to his age.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - Fred Plump, a former member of the Alabama House of Representatives was sentenced Friday to a year in federal prison for his role in a kickback scheme that he misappropriated Jefferson County tax dollars. Plump pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice for taking grant money from the Jefferson County Community Action Fund and kicking half back to former longtime lawmaker John Rogers and his romantic interest, Varrie Kindall.
