INTRODUCTION Depot medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA) is a highly effective, reversible, progestin-only injectable contraceptive that is also used to manage endometriosis, dysmenorrhea, and menorrhagia. Although initially formulated as an intramuscular (IM) injection, the United States (US) Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved a subcutaneous (SC) version in 2004 in the form of a self-contained syringe to be administered by a health care professional.
