The voices on the Aug. 11, 2009, audio recording exhibit enthusiasm and excitement as well as intrigue and concern. The people behind the voices seemed to embrace the motivational messages that resulted in seven major components intended to turn Southern Baptists back into evangelistic powerhouses. In the end, only two of the items were fully completed, but the process to get to the initial proposal of seven was no less intense.

The three major debates anticipated for the more than 10,000 messengers to the 2025 SBC Annual Meeting in Dallas — plus a few unexpected ones — all failed to garner enough votes for passage. The motion to abolish the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission received 42.84% of the 6,581 ballots cast while 56.89% of the ballots were in favor of retaining ERLC. The vote was 3,744 to keep ERLC ad 2,819 to abolish it, with 18 disallowed ballots.

A request for the SBC legal counsel to counter sue longtime pastor and former SBC president Johnny Hunt to recover legal fees incurred by the Convention was among 15 motions proposed during the afternoon session of the SBC Annual Meeting today (June 10). Another 13 motions were presented during the morning session.

Seventy-three of the more than 175 Baptist leaders sitting in the meeting hall the afternoon of May 13 made the ceremonial walk to the historic podium. Their signatures on the Declaration of Cooperation document plus the group picture veteran photographer Jim Veneman took of all who attended will forever be memorialized in the Southern Baptist Historical Library and Archives.
