My holiday season is not complete without my Mom’s Sugar Cookies. There are many sugar cookies out there in the world but in my opinion, these are the very best. It is so disappointing when you pick up a pretty, festively decorated cookie and discover it is dry and tasteless. It is hard to find the balance for a perfect cookie because it is either too soft and doesn’t hold its shape, or, like many, too hard and made to achieve longevity. This recipe has achieved the perfect balance.

Planning for your next cozy winter shindig? I am a huge fan of Choucroute Garnie. This dish originates from Alsace, as does part of my own heritage making it a dish that I grew up with and for me one of the top comfort foods. Casual enough to serve for a Sunday dinner but exciting enough to be a showstopper for a large crowd on NYE. Alsace is positioned at the Northern tip of France on the border of Germany that has over the centuries become a blended culture combining the best of both worlds.

Growing up, at the end of the harvest season, my mom always made a huge batch of Borscht to can and save for the winter days ahead. We giggle that her version really isn’t Borscht (the classic Russian beet soup), but more of a delicious veggie soup spiked with dill making it taste Borscht-like but without the beets. Borscht is an age-old Ukrainian dish made in the kitchens of any former republic that ever belonged to USSR, including Bessarabia, where my paternal roots are.

I have been dreaming of a return trip to the South African winelands. My first visit there years ago left such a large imprint on me, and my desire to return has been growing. While there I discovered so many different exciting wines and dishes with unique flavours. One dish that I absolutely loved is called Bobotie. It is basically a curry casserole with a delicious cream custard topping that is was declared the national dish of South Africa in 1954.

If you read my column, you know that I am a half Filipino household, and I love discovering the flavours and dishes from my husband Jay’s cook culture. I was searching my recipe files for a beef stew to make this week after seeing a possible snowflake on the forecast (!) but was at a loss for something new until I found this. Beef Mechado is a homey beef stew that is a favourite comfort food in the Philippines. It is so very simple, but unique to my tastebuds with the addition of lemon and soy.
