At last year’s UN climate conference in Dubai, Parties left no doubt about the ambition on forest protection necessary to averting the worst impacts of climate change. The Global Stocktake (GST) decision, signed by 193 countries, included in its roadmap to preventing exceeding 1.5 degrees of warming a 2030 deadline for halting and reversing deforestation and land degradation.

In 2019, NRDC published The Issue with Tissue, a report that spotlighted the link between major U.S. tissue product manufacturers and the destruction of one of the most ecologically important forests in the world, the boreal forest of Canada. It also included a scorecard for consumers, ranking major toilet paper, paper towel, and facial tissue brands on their sustainability for forests and the climate.

After decades of incremental global efforts, leaving too many commitments and promises unfulfilled, the international community has an opportunity to finally deliver on forest protection. Countries have begun negotiations around implementing the recommendations emerging from the Global Stocktake (GST), a roadmap to meeting international climate targets agreed at last year’s UN climate conference (COP28) that includes calls for halting and reversing deforestation and forest degradation by 2030.
