John Evetts, 73, has spent nearly 50 years working on the restoration of everything from a royal water tower at Sandringham to a Lundy Island lighthouse and a cottage on the Ffestiniog railway in Snowdonia. His job as furnishings manager at the Landmark Trust has involved travelling hundreds of miles each week in a van loaded with spare lampshades and replacement sofa covers.

For me, September (sometimes even into October) is the best time for a “summer” holiday (sorry, school-term prisoners — I will be there soon). The sizzle has gone out of the heat but the sea is still warm, classrooms are full again so beaches are becalmed, and prices are beginning to cool. It’s the ideal time to enjoy a seaside break. Mrs Large can’t manage five minutes’ peace in Jill Murphy’s classic children’s book about a family of five — five! — elephants. She should have taken her rabble to Caserio del Mirador in southeast Spain, between Valencia and Alicante. The thoroughly family-friendly hotel, near the town of Xalo — with mountain views of the Sierra de Bernia in front and the Serra del Ferrer behind — was opened more than 20 years ago by expats Sarah and Johnny Robinson.

TikTok is awash with tips for long-haul travel with toddlers, from how to fashion the onboard blanket into a hammock between seat rows to what to pack for them in your carry-on luggage (stickers, snacks, more snacks … stickers). The real key, though, is the destination. We wanted March sunshine, a time difference that wasn’t too disruptive and hotels that welcome children with real warmth, and Mauritius came out on top.

Huw Davies is into maps. So much so that during the Covid lockdowns he plotted a series of cycle routes around England, Wales and Northern Ireland taking in every single one of the National Trust’s 624 properties and places, from Birling Gap and the Seven Sisters in East Sussex to Lindisfarne Castle in Northumberland and the Giant’s Causeway in Co Antrim (Scotland has a separate trust).

Holidaying with a toddler requires a recalibration of expectations. My husband and I returned from last year’s summer trip with ours more exhausted than when we’d set out. Keeping both parties happy or simply rested is tough. Especially if parents don’t want to entirely forgo more grown-up pursuits: fine dining, say, or skiing, maybe ten minutes in a spa or bar. In Europe (where parenthood is not penalised with expensive nurseries) they’ve come up with a stylish solution: family-only hotels.

London’s most flamboyant postcode has welcomed a theatrical hotel with the chutzpah to rival the most glittering West End show. Broadwick Soho’s dazzling looks — name up in lights on the exterior, pink elephant statues in top hat and tails over the entrance, lacquered ceilings, staff in leopard print jackets or stripy jumpsuits — is the work of design’s greatest showman, Martin Brudnizki. It’s his first hotel in London.
