The announcement by Just Stop Oil that it has, well, just stopped because it has achieved its aims will likely bemuse fellow eco warriors who thought the climate crisis was ongoing. The group, which became known for throwing soup at priceless art works and disrupting traffic, said it would cease high-profile protests after its chief demand, to end new oil and gas extraction, is now government policy.

Wes Streeting is nothing if not a brave politician. He already had a reputation for speaking his mind, and quite a lot of sense, on a range of toxic issues, from assisted dying to banning puberty blockers. This week the Health Secretary broached the minefield of mental health, telling the BBC’s Laura Kuenssberg there is an ‘overdiagnosis’ of mental health conditions.

As she announced she was quitting the political arena, Nicola Sturgeon took many people by surprise. Not because she was finally going, having decided not to stand for re-election next year, but because she was still there. Her dramatic exit as first minister two years ago, before being arrested as part of an ongoing fraud inquiry over SNP finances, brought her nearly nine years in power to an end and the political obituarists got to work.

During Donald Trump’s State of the Union address on Tuesday, Democrats held up “No kings” signs to mock the president’s creepingly authoritarian rule. But this is one era in the country’s history when Americans may look enviously across the Atlantic and wish they did have a king to smooth their troubled waters. Especially a king whose soft skills are so far proving to be something of a healing balm in the growing crisis in international relations.
