As a kid, being called a “copycat” felt like the most hurtful insult I could receive. Well-meaning adults would attempt to offer consolation, saying “Imitation is the highest form of flattery,” but this adage was no match for my crushed 10-year-old ego. As I got older, unoriginality felt like an inescapable curse. Every relatable video I scroll through on TikTok reminds me that I’ve never had an original thought … ever.

One-thousand five-hundred square feet of home, overflowing with timeless memories and family history, and a young girl beneath the table. The kitchen table is the ideal spot for an only child to shelter from the commotion of what some might call an overbearing family. The car’s engine quieted, headlights glaring through the window faded to darkness, and the footsteps and muffled conversations grew louder. Curled up beneath the kitchen table, I panicked and gripped Bear Bear closer to my chest.

Whether I am critiquing, discussing, photographing, preparing, or passionately consuming it, I am unapologetically obsessed with food. As a kid, I preferred the Food Network over Disney Channel, with Rachael Ray’s 30 Minute Meals and Giada De Laurentiis’ Everyday Italian captivating my attention every Sunday morning. The Food Network was channel number 66 on my childhood television provider, a number forever etched into my memory.

When I stumbled upon a Sylvia Plath quote a few weeks ago, I finally felt like the chaos of my internal dialogue subsided. “I can never read all the books I want; I can never be all the people I want and live all the lives I want. I can never train myself in all the skills I want. And why do I want? I want to live and feel all the shades, tones and variations of mental and physical experience possible in my life.

Growing up as an only child, I was constantly asked, “Do you like it?”—almost always with a dismissive tone, as if it were impossible that I could enjoy being the only child in my family. People tended to immediately follow up their question by asking if I wished I had siblings.

Like many others, I have found myself enthralled with TikTok “day in the life” videos. And it’s not a good habit. For months, short clips of twenty-something-year-old girls showing the best parts of their days have filled my “For You” page. These clips are often accompanied by upbeat or seasonally appropriate music and sometimes even a cheerful, bubbly voice-over. As entertaining as these videos can be, they can also be a breeding ground for social comparison.
