They hired Falls Church architect Charles Moore to maneuver a whole-house remodel, completed in 2011, that maximizes views of the serene lake in back.

Five local sports legends were inducted into the Arlington Sports Hall of Fame during an Oct. 9, 2024, ceremony at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Arlington. They now join ranks with 68 fellow honored athletes, coaches, sports officials, journalists and administrators, including luminaries such as World Series champion George McQuinn, NFL wide receiver Eric Metcalf, Olympic swimmer Tom Dolan, ultra-marathoner Michael Wardian and track star Noel Deskins.

Funny how certain patterns repeat themselves in nature. Capillaries look like trees, honeycombs resemble tessellated fish scales, and Fibonacci’s spiral is expressed in objects ranging from nautilus shells to pine cones. So one could easily be forgiven for interpreting this third-floor permanent art installation inside Meridian High School in Falls Church as an homage to ocean life. At first glance, the 1,200 or so ceramic forms look like a vibrant coral reef.

County fairs have been an American tradition ever since New England farmer Elkanah Watson launched the nation’s first livestock competition in 1811 in Pittsfield, Mass. But it wasn’t until 1977 that Arlington jumped on the bandwagon.
