Welcome to the Weekly Scroll, a recap of the past week on the social web! Posting has been a little bit slower here the last week as I’ve been taking care of a family member as they’re recovering from surgery.

To listen to online culture writers, we we’re surrounded by slop. There’s AI slop, of course, which I’ve written about many times. But now all forms of entertainment are slop. There’s streaming slop and TikTok slop. All of modern pop music is slop. Taylor Swift is especially slop. Marvel is slop, Harry Potter is slop, Netflix is slop. Polygon declares we’re in the slop era of entertainment while Garbage Day declares this the Age of Slop. We’re not safe even if we turn our backs on movies and TV.

Hey there! I’m working on a couple of larger projects that I’ll hopefully be able to share in the next few weeks, so this week I’m sharing a post from the blog’s early days. Infinite Scroll’s subscriber count has more than 10x’d since this was published, so many/most of you wouldn’t have seen it the first time around. As a reminder, you can always go catch up on the classic posts at the Top Posts tab. I’ll be back over the weekend with the normal Weekly Scroll post.

I was once again featured in The Dispatch this week - they’ve also been kind enough to offer Infinite Scroll readers a 15% discount on membership with code ‘JEREMIAH’ - if you’re interested you can join here. We have a new pope! If you’re like me, you found out the normal way one learns these things - from fried chicken brand accounts:On just the second day of the conclave cardinals chose Cardinal Robert Prevost of Chicago to be the new pope, who will be styled as Pope Leo XIV.

I’ve got another piece in The Dispatch today about how MAGA trolls are related to the ‘Gen Z Boss and a Mini’ video, and how the online right’s love of strong men is rooted in their own weakness:“Hard times create strong men. Strong men create good times. Good times create weak men. And weak men create hard times.”This pithy aphorism has captured a popular view of history for as long as we’ve had the concept of history.

Anyone, literally anyone, other than Hochul for the Dems. She is an astonishingly poor politician, a failure on so many levels. https://t.co/iBJQ4WbWFN

Seems like a bad idea to pass a bill that takes healthcare away from tens of millions of people and still makes the budget deficit worse.

The reason real estate agents suck is because they care more about speed than the price. They'd rather close fast and move on to the next sale rather than fight to get a 5% better price. Twice as many transactions at a slightly lower commission is way, way more money.

Anyone who has ever bought or sold a house comes to realize you're mostly negotiating with your own agent, while your agent is mostly colluding with the other agent against both buyer and seller offering back incomplete information—an entirely unaligned transaction experience.
