The character of Miyagi has now passed away (Morita died in 2005), but his link to Karate Kid: Legends is established from the outset by a flashback from The Karate Kid Part II (1986), in which Mr Miyagi reveals the connection between karate and kung fu in his style of martial arts. "Two branches, one tree" is his mantra, and that becomes the motif of this sadly underwhelming next chapter in the franchise.

The macabre methods of demise, the ominous atmosphere and a decent cast established the creepy template but over four further films, only the elaborate death-dealing carnage tended to stick in the memory, although Final Destination 5 (2011) did tie off at least one narrative loop. Now, 14 years after that fifth film comes this tension-filled reboot, only here Death is spreading his wings further than just a few frantic survivors of a crash or bridge collapse.

In The Brutalist, she plays wife to another creative genius, the tormented architect and Holocaust survivor László Tóth (Adrien Brody). Like her husband, Erzsébet was sent to a concentration camp and survived, albeit with ailing health, but is unable to join him in America until years after the War. Indeed, her first appearance is halfway through in the film, and yet she is the beating heart of the 215-minute epic.
