Lingering showers Scattered showers linger this morning ahead of a cool front, which will usher in dryer change for the afternoon, along with seasonal upper 70s in the Tri-Cities, low 70s in the mountains. Cooler days ahead Temperatures are expected to run about 10 degrees below average starting Thursday and lasting into the weekend. Highs will range from the mid to upper 60s on Thursday and Friday with lows in the 40s Thursday and Friday nights.

Severe storm risk today A few severe storms will be possible late this afternoon into early this evening, especially for Kentucky and parts of SW Virginia. The main risk for severe weather is expected late this evening through midnight tonight as a squall line develops and moves through the region. This line will pose a damaging wind risk, with a few spin-up tornadoes, as well as some hail. The best time for severe weather looks to be from 7pm this evening through 2am Wednesday morning.

Summer heat Temperatures will be on the rise today as summer heat returns to the region. A combination of higher temperatures and higher humidity will send heat index values into the upper 80s. A few showers or storms are possible later this evening into the overnight hours. Storm risk Friday A few clusters of storms could move through the region Friday increasing the risk of scattered storms in the region.

Wet day Scattered showers continue this morning with another round of rain and storms likely this afternoon and evening. There is a marginal severe storm risk for parts of the area from generally the mountain counties on east into the Carolinas. After very heavy rain in the mountains over the last 24 hours, an ongoing flood risk continues this morning for areas in and around Boone, N.C, while the overall flood risk will shift away from the region well to the east.
