Grove of Narberth hotelTenby Golf Club has its own accommodation but for this trip I stayed ten miles north at this beautiful hotel just outside Narberth. About a month before my visit, the Grove of Narberth won the Independent Hotel of the Year award at the Independent Hotel Show and it’s easy to see why. Lovingly, painstakingly and sympathetically restored earlier this century, its feel and vibe are the kind that make you never want to leave.

Obviously, the first thing that the brief for this article demanded was a little bit of maths on my part, for I am not sad enough to carry round in my head the number of golf holes I’ve played in my life. But I do know that I have played 1,047 courses as of April 2025 (some may say knowing that figure is nearly as sad), so the first thing to do was to tot up the number of non-18-holers among them, most of which have been nine-holers, though not all.

This is now the 11th of our biennial lists, which we strongly believe have evolved to be an honest, representative and trustworthy ranking of the best 200 courses that are open to all.

When I was commissioned to write this feature for our UK and Ireland Top 100 golf courses in association with Peter Millar, I asked editor Neil Tappin how many holes to include. “Seven sounds about right to me,” came the reply.

Interesting stuff from Kevin here...

Golfers cherish their home turf, but what happens when architects redraw the lines? From County Sligo to The Island, Kevin Markham wrestles with change – and the fierce loyalty it stirs. https://t.co/dmd6ifmZis

What about other rankings that have it much lower than we do, Gareth...?

@GolfMonthly @petermillar Porthcawl only 21st says this list can’t be taken seriously
