How I Used Carb Cycling to Burn Fat and Maintain MuscleI’ve tried cutting carbs and restricting calories to burn fat. Sure, I lost weight, but I could never get truly shredded. The reason is that traditional diets break down muscle along with fat. So I ended up looking more skinny than jacked. Then, I discovered the power of carb cycling, a simple method to balance feeding muscle and burning fat. I recently used carb cycling to lose 31 pounds of almost pure body fat.

I just started Dan Davies’ new book, The Unaccountability Machine. His last book, on financial fraud, was both interesting in its own right and had surprising lessons for academic scientists. So I’m hoping for the same from Davies’ new book, and so far it’s satisfying my hopes.

Tyre failure is responsible for many deaths and injuries worldwide, which is why these should be checked at least once a week.

Recently, we invited you to ask us anything! Today’s question comes from Falko Buschke (click that link for the full question, which I’m about to summarize). Falko notes that, in the latest Clarivate journal citation reports, several leading ecology journals rank surprisingly low in impact factor (IF) among all 195 journals in the Clarivate “ecology” category. For instance, Journal of Ecology is only 20th in IF. Ecology is 32nd. Journal of Animal Ecology is 48th. Oikos is 56th.

Back in 2016, Meghan wrote a comprehensive post on how to format your cv for a faculty job application. Everything she said remains great advice today. But one thing she didn’t cover was preprints, because back in 2016 preprints weren’t yet much of a thing in ecology. Now they’re much more of a thing. So, as a faculty job applicant, should you list preprints on your cv? If so, why? And how? Note that this post isn’t about whether or why you should post preprints.

In psychology, published replication attempts have no detectable effect on the rate at which the original paper is cited, whether or not the original result replicated. That’s at least in part because the replications themselves are hardly cited. Andrew Gelman discusses this result, and similar results in other fields.
