최근 말레이시아 쿠알라룸푸르에서 열린 포춘 ASEAN-GCC 경제포럼에 참석했다. 나는 이 자리에서 AI를 주제로 한 두 개의 세션을 사회했다. 현장에서 가장 인상적이었던 건 동남아시아와 걸프 국가 지도자들이 자국이 AI 혁신의 수혜자가 되기를 간절히 바라고 있다는 점이었다. 동시에 이들은 ‘AI 주권(AI Sovereignty)’에 대한 염려도 안고 있었다. 미국이나 중국에 전적으로 의존하지 않고, 데이터센터부터 데이터, AI 모델과 애플리케이션에 이르기까지 핵심 기술을 직접 통제하길 원하고 있다. AI는 그 특성상 특정한 가치관과 문화를 반영하게 마련이다. 특히 대규모 언어모델은 더욱 그렇다. 동남아와 중동 국가들은 이들 기술이 자국의 가치와 문화를 배제할까 우려하고 있다. AI 기술과 인프라를 두고 미국과 중국 중 하나를 선택하라는 워싱턴의 강경한 메시지에도 불편함을 표하고 있다.
