I knew the sound by heart now; an echo-dipped crackling kind of zap in the inner ear. I knew what it meant. And I had a reasonable idea of where I would find myself once I opened my eyes. But I still hesitated. Shit. I could even smell it at this point. Prison. I went ahead and opened my eyes to confirm the inevitable. I hated being in prison, for all the reasons all prisoners hated being in prison… it sucked. But also, I was innocent.

I am a signal. A wave. Sent by a sentient being. Sent to a sentient being. But not a sentient being myself. I’ve no control over my destination. I’ve no control over asteroid belts, and the unintended redirections they can cause me if the asteroids are composed of enough reflective metal. I can’t impact my destination or alter my trajectory. My contents are not of my own making. They will affect the recipient however they affect the recipient, regardless of my wishes. That is… if I reach the recipient.

One day I sat against the trunk of an apple tree atop a hill overlooking my village. I was primed to do some serious thinking about life and the universe. The weather was fair; a slight breeze pulsed around me. The sun was bright but not too hot. I took long, deep breaths. I was relaxed and ready for inspiration. Suddenly an apple fell from one of the branches above. I looked up and watched its brief descent. Until it stopped falling just two inches above the ground and began to hover there.
