The first amendment is the fundamental building block to freedom in the United States; “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”The line “freedom of speech” is something that I believe to be often overlooked in America today.

Following the 2024 presidential election, the ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge, an organization whose aim is to increase civic engagement on college campuses, recognized SUNY New Paltz, along with 471 other colleges, for having the “most engaged college student voting.”This recognition comes in part from a nonpartisan democratic engagement action plan written by New Paltz’s Student Voter and Civic Engagement Committee.

It seems that all I am able to contribute to The Oracle’s Arts and Entertainment Playlist as its Editor-in-Chief is a collection of songs that, to me, feel like the changing of seasons from fall to winter. Eerily close to a year ago today, I compiled a Playlist for … Midwest Winters. This year I’ve got one for winter’s approach. This year specifically has felt very odd with days where the temperature’s high is 40 degrees and then days where the high is 70. It almost feels fake at times.

Student-athletes put in immense amounts of effort both on and off the field. From training, practices and game days, to classes, studying and exams, they are always on the clock. Most often, the only time these students are given the opportunity to speak about their performance is right after their games. Fourth-year digital media production major Michael Ascanio, who plays center field for the SUNY New Paltz Baseball team, wanted to change that.

Reps. Pat Ryan and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez came to SUNY New Paltz on Oct. 10 for a “Get Out the Vote” rally to encourage voter participation in the upcoming election. A protest opposing the representatives’ presence occurred outside of the Coykendall Science Building (CSB), where the event took place.
