With a wobbly voice, the grandmother quavered, “You’ll be so, so happy here.” Although she hardly looked happy herself. Then she latched herself onto me, hugging me close as her true weeping began.

Remembrance of bags past. My father made me very angry one day when I was around nine. I can’t recall what he’d done to cause this fury–but I remember what I chose to do next. I ran away from home.
