MANILA, Philippines — President Marcos has ordered an investigation into the bollards or vehicle barriers at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (Naia) Terminal 1 that gave way during the tragic vehicle crash on Sunday that left two people dead, including a 5-year-old girl who was there to see her father off, and four others injured. Malacañang said the protective bollards were installed during the term of former President Rodrigo Duterte in 2019.

MANILA, Philippines — Malacañang is open to the proposal of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to delay the implementation of the sale of rice at P20 per kilogram in the Visayas and in Kadiwa stores due to the ban on election spending 10 days before the May 12 polls. “If that is the suggestion and policy of the Comelec chair [George Erwin Garcia], then we will be open to that,” Presidential Communications Office Undersecretary and Palace press officer Claire Castro told reporters on Wednesday.

MANILA, Philippines — While Commission on Elections (Comelec) chair George Garcia said he partly supports a “hybrid,” or mixed, manual and automated election, there is no legal basis nor funds for such a proposal. “The present legal regime does not allow a hybridized approach, and the budget was given to Comelec [by Congress] only for full automation and not hybridized election,” Garcia said at the weekend.

MANILA, Philippines — Top officials of the Department of Transportation (DOTr) and the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) appear to disagree on what to do with the Edsa busway. In a Malacañang press briefing on Wednesday, MMDA Chair Romando Artes said the government was considering a program to remove the busway once the capacity of the Metro Rail Transit 3 (MRT-3), which also runs on Edsa, is expanded.
