The Sparta Rotary Christmas Parade is scheduled to start at 4 p.m., on Saturday, Dec. 14, beginning at White County High School. The parade will turn right on Polk Street, then left onto Hampton Drive. The parade will turn left onto Bockman Way and continue across town to Liberty Square. After the parade, the tree lighting will take place on the square. There will be many activities for families to enjoy and take part in.

Just a few months ago, a resident approached me with a concern about the tornado and storm warning sirens within the city limits. They mentioned not hearing the sirens and being caught off guard by a recent storm. During a meeting with the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), their representative asked if there was anything they could assist us with.

Many of you may have noticed a large truck in our area this week doing work in and around our sewer line system. The city of Sparta has contracted a company to use a video system to help us find problem areas in our sewer system. Using CCTV for sewer line inspection is a key method for identifying a range of structural and functional issues that can compromise the sewer system.

There are several projects that are in the pipeline to research, begin, plan, and discuss, and I would like to mention some of them today. Some of you may have noticed a large tanker type truck in the city streets this past week. We have contracted with a company to video our sewer lines. The video will allow us to see problem areas in our sewer system. When a problem is found, we will have a better opportunity to get the problem repaired. The work should be completed by the end of the week.

Answer:I can only answer for the city, but we do follow the “Sunshine Law” and what is required of public meetings. The city and the county are to follow the same law. The Open Meetings Act, also known as the “Sunshine Law,” ensures that government meetings are open to the public. I would like to take this time to give a quick update on some of the city’s events and projects that are taking place or have been completed. The Sparta Hardware building debris has been removed, and the cleanup is near completion. The future plans for that lot have not been determined. The owner of the lot will be making that decision in the near future. The Gaines Street sidewalk project has been started and is not complete as of this date.

I want to take a moment to express my deep appreciation and gratitude for the outstanding teamwork and dedication displayed during the recent incident on Bockman Way on Friday evening. When a tree fell and blocked our main road through town, our community rose to the challenge, and I couldn’t be more proud. First and foremost, I would like to thank the crews who quickly jumped into action to clear the way.

Question:Are there any plans to make the South Carter Street Park a safer place to walk? Answer:I have had several citizens mention the issue of safety at our parks. It is a concern, and the board of aldermen is aware of the concerns. We are in the process of installing better lighting at the walking trails and looking into the possibility of putting the blue light police call stations around the park area. We are looking into getting the heavy brushy areas around the walking track cleared out.
