It is imperative that we spread the word about these catastrophic and frightening problems. Poetry has a unique power to achieve an emotional and thought-provoking response in it’s audience.

Since 1989, October has been known as Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM), a time to support victims and survivors of domestic violence and listen to their stories. In this time, it is imperative that we acknowledge the devastating impact that domestic violence instils, and reflect upon its far-reaching consequences. Domestic violence is an epidemic that continues to spread across the UK at an alarming rate, with 1 in 5 adults experiencing domestic abuse in their lifetime.

For most of 2023, I was living beneath the surface. A brain tumor that first announced itself more than a decade earlier, when I was living and working in Beirut as a foreign correspondent, re-entered our lives late one night in October. My partner David had to watch me seize uncontrollably for several minutes, afraid that I would suffocate before the paramedics could arrive. Mercifully, our five-year-old daughter slept through it all. She didn’t have to see me like that.

The first person I heard say, “That is inappropriate” was a boy I shared a house with in Brunswick. I had told him my mum used chicken stock in vegetable soup that she then served to vegetarians, so they could enjoy something with a bit more flavour. I thought this was funny. He thought it was morally reprehensible – and entirely inappropriate.
My parents lived and let live.
