On 16th April the UK Supreme Court ruled that, for the purposes of the Equality Act 2010, the term “sex” (and the terms “man” or “woman”) should be understood to refer solely to “biological sex”. That is to say, sex as originally recorded at birth on a person’s birth certificate. The ruling followed a case brought by For Women Scotland, a “gender critical” campaign.

If I, as a trans writer, was trying to create a parody of a moral panic, I would probably come up with the idea that British children are taught that there are '72 genders'. I am not even sure it would work as satire, as it sounds a bit too on the nose. The concept is so obviously ludicrous and extreme that no intelligent person could possibly believe it. The government crackdown on protest rights has suffered a setback, after the High Court found that moves to make it easier for the police to arrest peaceful protesters are unlawful. The former home secretary Suella Braverman brought the measures in last year without proper debate in parliament, using Henry VIII powers to expand the definition of “serious disruption” as it relates to processions and assemblies under the Public Order Act 1986 to include anything which was “more than minor”.

Leighton Williams was only 19 in 2007, when he drunkenly attacked a man in a Caerphilly park and was sentenced to a minimum of two years in jail. But a previous conviction for grievous bodily harm was enough to convince the judge at his trial to hand down an indefinite prison sentence. After 16 years in prison, Williams wept last week as the Court of Appeal altered his sentence and ordered his immediate release.

A mother stuck living next door to a neighbour who sexually abused her daughter has won her case against Westminster City Council, after the High Court said the council’s housing policy discriminates against women. The abuse and its consequences have had a devastating impact on the family. The daughter spent time sleeping rough to avoid her home and had been self-harming, taking drugs and was excluded from school.
