Yesterday Romanians should have been voting in the country’s presidential election runoff between far-right populist Calin Georgescu and liberal Elena Lasconi. Instead police were busy arresting dozens of armed men who were travelling to the capital Bucharest to join protests, after the country’s top court cancelled the vote following allegations of Russian interference via social media.

New York authorities were still hunting on Thursday for the gunman who fatally shot Brian Thompson, the chief executive of health insurer UnitedHealthcare. A motive for the killing was also unclear – the police said they were investigating words found on bullet casings at the scene outside a Manhattan hotel which included “delay” and “deny”, possibly referring to insurers seeking to avoid paying claims.

Michel Barnier is now both the oldest and most short-lived French prime minister since the Fifth Republic was founded in 1958. Last night a motion of no confidence passed by 331 votes in the 577-strong national assembly, as Marine Le Pen’s far-right party joined forces with a leftist bloc to bring down Barnier’s government after three months over his deficit-cutting 2025 budget, which included €60 billion in tax increases and spending cuts.
