Ever since I was a teenager, one of my favorite holidays has been May Day—the first of May. This holiday has the wonderful distinction of syncretism between the European pagan traditions that celebrate the return of spring, and the more-recent International Workers’ Day—both known as May Day. May Day (the pagan holiday) comes with its vernal traditions of flower crowns and maypoles garlanded with trailing ribbons. May Day (the workers’ holiday) is observed with marches and demonstrations.

On April 3, the joint Governmental Affairs Economic Development Committee of the New Orleans City Council met and discussed a resolution “Prioritizing transparency, public engagement, and an effort that restores Lincoln Beach in a manner driven by community-based decision-making.” Lincoln Beach is an historic beach on Lake Pontchartrain in New Orleans East that was a recreation space for Black New Orleanians in the Jim Crow era, when Pontchartrain Beach was segregated.
