You’d be hard-pressed to find a story more inspiring than Najib’s. By the time he turned just 11, he had been through truly unimaginable hardships — but he persevered and kept going, not just surviving, but living life on his own terms and thriving. At a time when LGBTQ+ rights are under attack and some of our most basic freedoms are being threatened, it feels especially important to read a story about this kind of defiance — and success.

The day a new story publishes is always my favorite. It’s so exciting to finally get to share with the rest of the world the thing that’s been taking up so much space in our brains during the previous days, weeks and months. The thing, the story, that we know is so amazing that everyone needs to read it ASAP. The only down side? What if readers were busy or skipped checking their email the day it went out altogether and missed it?

While Memorial Day weekend usually marks the unofficial beginning of summer, from where I’m sitting right now, the forecast is calling for rain, it’s a bit gray and there’s a chill in the air. By the time Monday rolls around, though, things will be looking up. I wrote about this a bit when we first published Elizabeth Laura Nelson’s piece, “What’s the Opposite of Taking Someone’s Virginity?” a few weeks ago, but this essay first came about after I read Elizabeth’s recent Modern Love essay and adored it. I reached out to her hoping she might have more to say about Jeff, the best-friend-turned-lover she wrote about who (spoiler alert!) died shortly after they finally got together, and she did! I was in luck.
