The Cody Volunteer Fire Department held an open house to cap off Fire Prevention Week on Saturday. Many people, including scores of children, checked out the equipment, talked with firefighters, and were instructed about to keep residents safe when it comes to cooking in the home. There was also a demonstration of two rooms of a home, one with a fire suppression kit in it, the other without. People were amazed at how quickly the fire spread in the room without fire suppression.

Parts of Park County got over 6 inches of snow as a weather system makes it’s way from the Pacific Northwest all the way across the state. Meteorologist Don Day said it would be “the first winter storm of the season” as places at higher elevations like Wapiti and Yellowstone got significant snowfall. Cody was spared the white stuff, but had over a half-inch of rain accumulate, making downtown wet and soggy, filling up gullies and keeping gutters busy with runoff.

Wyomingites will be treated to a celestial treat this Saturday when a rare solar eclipse will be in the sky. People from Oregon to Texas will be able to see the event when the moon passes in front of the sun and creates an appearance of an illuminated “ring of fire” in the sky. According to NASA, the path of annularity will be able to view the full “ring of fire” effect.

In honor and memory of Senator Dianne Feinstein, Governor Mark Gordon has ordered both the United States and Wyoming flags to fly at half-staff immediately until the day of interment in accordance with President Biden’s Presidential Proclamation. There will be a nation wide emergency alert test being conducted on Wednesday, October 4 at 12:20 p.m. MST. These notifications are being sent from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Radios and televisions will also be tested to ensure the system is ready to be used while preparing the community to be familiar to these notices. The portion of the test related to cell phones will assess the Wireless Emergency Alerts across the country.

A hunter shot a female grizzly bear on Tuesday, September 26 in Beattie Gulch, close to the northern entrance to Yellowstone National Park, outside of Gardiner, Montana. The hunter was charged, and was able to shot the grizzly at close range, according the Montanan Fish, Wildlife and Parks Department (FWP). On Tuesday, September 26, two hunters were walking through a popular hunting spot that is home to bison, deer, pronghorn antelope, elk, wolves, bighorn sheep and bears.

Russ Francis, NFL Super Bowl Champion and former radio host on KODI died in a plane crash Sunday afternoon in upstate New York. Francis, and longtime partner, Jaclyn Ryan, lived on a ranch between Cody and Powell in 2016. During that time, Francis hosted a radio show on KODI called Forever West Outdoors where he shared about his love of Wyoming and the great outdoors. In 2020, Francis and Ryan moved back to Connecticut, but would visit the Cowboy State often.

In honor of National Coffee with a Cop Day, the Cody Police Department, the Park County Sheriff’s Office and the Wyoming Highway Patrol will be hosting a local Coffee with a Cop event on Wednesday, October 4. At 9 a.m. to 10 a.m., members of the community are invited to meet local law enforcement officers for a cup of coffee at the Pardners Cafe, located in the Park County Library in Cody.
