Gov. Kathy Hochul (D-NY) is calling creating affordable housing a top priority in her state budget, and her housing programs seem to already be paying dividends in central New York. On Thursday during a visit to Syracuse, Hochul presented the keys to a new three-bedroom home on Loomis Ave. to Theresa Durham. Durham plans to move there from her current home at McKinney Manor. Big changes are coming to SUNY Upstate, as the state budget earmarks $450 million to help the hospital’s aging emergency department. Gov. Kathy Hochul (D-NY) said the $200 million she initially included in her budget for SUNY Upstate was a placeholder, and when she toured the hospital, she realized more money was needed to build a world-class emergency room. "That was not hard for me once I saw firsthand of the stress they're under,” Hochul said.

Big changes are coming to OCRRA’s Ley Creek transfer station in the Town of Salina. The massive facility was built in the 1970s, with an addition in the 1990s. Now, using highly specialized equipment, it’s coming down.

People who live in Watertown are voicing their concerns about the city’s proposed budget that includes a hefty tax increase. Zoo New York received the largest show of support at Monday night’s budget hearing. Wearing shirts saying “I Love the Zoo,” multiple people spoke out against the lack of funding for the zoo in the budget, including volunteer Allison Gorham.

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand is speaking out about actions from the Trump administration that have hurt the Head Start program. The program provides early childhood education and services and support to families. At the PEACE, Inc. Merrick Head Start in Syracuse, Mitayah Donerlson spoke through tears about what the program has meant to her son, Kasen. He started there at age one, just six months after receiving a liver transplant.
