Australia has form for bold regulation. It was the first country to introduce plain packaging on cigarettes, a model exported globally. Tobacco companies took legal action and used obscure international treaties to try and force Australia to abandon plain packaging, but it was ultimately hailed a success. Now the government wants to enforce a minimum age for using social media.

ASI passed a resolution last month advocating for undocumented student employment on campus, adding that they will also work to inform campus partners of the California Dream Act Service Grant Program, which is a grant program designated to fund undocumented student jobs on campus.

At the last meeting of the academic year, Associated Students postponed a resolution to appoint the Environmental Sustainability Commission Director for the 2024-25 school year during their board meeting. The resolution proposed the appointment of student Hafsa Farooqui for the position. Typically, ASI student leader positions for the following academic year are voted on by the current board of directors after the president is elected.

Solomon Islands’ elections are normally principally domestic affairs, but the polls held on 17 April 2024 threw the country into the international spotlight. They were widely predicted to yield a victory for Manasseh Sogavare, the four-time prime minister who brokered his country’s 2019 switch from recognizing Taiwan to diplomatic links with China and who then signed a security deal allowing the deployment of Chinese security personnel and naval vessels to the island group.
