What began as a routine, mindless login to Facebook quickly spiralled into the irrevocable destruction of 16 years of milestones and shared history. Digital unravellingWaiting for a physio appointment, I reflexively reached for my phone and opened Facebook. What should have been an uneventful scroll seemingly triggered a sequence of events that have left me unexpectedly reeling. An unusual password prompt was the first red flag.

Luce says, “She’s right there, I can feel her!”. The midwives force, literally push, Luce onto the bed and drive her legs apart. One checks and agrees she can feel the baby’s head. Agnes doesn’t believe her and pushes her fingers inside Luce before agreeing. Then the anaesthetist is trying to make Luce get up, off her back, and sit on the very edge of the bed to talk her through the epi again, which Luce is not comprehending at all she was in so much pain, pretty much paralysed with it.

It’s a strange feeling to hold all the memories of your family. To have no one left to corroborate childhood memories with. To know gaps in your knowledge will never be filled. What was your first food? How did your parents meet? What was their favourite food?  My mum died 19 years ago. My dad only months. As an only child, there is a particular weight to being the only family member left. Here is what I have learned. You cannot grieve in advance. Grief comes after the death. Or at least another form of it.
