Imagine there were a database containing all the world’s Earth science data, from those characterizing hazards like earthquakes and volcanoes to those recording changes in the atmosphere and ocean. This hypothetical resource had been built up, little by little, through untold piecemeal contributions from individuals and small teams of researchers, many of the observations gathered from sites now inaccessible or destroyed.
