Bryan Stevenson, author of “Just Mercy” and a lawyer and social justice activist, was named Ohio State’s May 7 spring commencement keynote speaker, the university announced Tuesday. More than 12,000 degrees and certificates will be awarded in Ohio Stadium. According to the release, Stevenson is the founder of the Equal Justice Initiative — an organization that advocates for racial justice, criminal justice reform and anti-poverty. He will be awarded a Doctor in Public Service.

At least one person was seen open carrying large guns, cameras and flags across from Ohio State’s campus Wednesday afternoon on North High Street, causing alarm around campus. Though open carrying guns is legal, according to Ohio law, recent mass shootings sparked concern from the Ohio State community worried about its safety due to the demonstration.

University President Kristina M. Johnson shared her thoughts and prayers for Michigan State University Tuesday after an active shooter killed three students and wounded five on its campus Monday night. According to the MSU Police’s Twitter, 43-year-old Anthony Dwayne McRae fired inside the MSU Union and Berkey Hall around 8:30 p.m. The manhunt and campus lockdown lasted three hours. McRae died of a “self-inflicted gunshot wound” and was not associated with the university.

Three years after their arrest on charges of rape and kidnapping, two former Ohio State football players sat in a crowded courtroom Tuesday as attorneys argued over video evidence and the credibility of the testimony against them. Amir Riep and Jahsen Wint, both 24, are on trial in Franklin County Common Pleas Court on two counts of rape and a single count of kidnapping in the alleged assault of 19-year-old woman in February 2020. If convicted, they face maximum sentences of 33 years.
