Everyone knows Python is everywhere in web development. Netflix, Instagram, and Dropbox all rely on it. But Python doesn’t just live in web apps. Python, and its libraries and frameworks, quietly run things in some pretty unexpected places. In this post, I want to show you some of the weirder, cooler, and less obvious spots where Python is doing heavy lifting. From controlling Mars rovers to helping archaeologists dig up the past, Python’s role is way broader than most people realize.

Today, I’m at peace with the existence of ChatGPT — but when it first launched, I was terrified. My mother, a fourth-grade teacher, promptly informed me (a career writer and technical content manager) that I’d soon be out of a job. Years later, still employed, I now strive to make ChatGPT my ally. Not only have I come to appreciate how helpful it can be, but I also figure it’s wise not to be enemy No. 1 when the robots take over. That said, why am I rambling on about this?

Why math? It’s a great question. I remember the last algebra class I took (definitely not a math person). Every time we learned some complex and seemingly abstract concept, I would ask my professor why we need to learn this and how it’s applicable in the real world. While I’m sure he absolutely loved that, he would Google the real-world application and explain how and why it’s useful.

In Python, as well as in languages like JavaScript and Ruby, higher-order functions such as map(),filter(), and reduce() are used to process and transform data. They enable flexible operations on data without the need for explicit loops. Higher-order functions operate on other functions — either by taking functions as arguments or, in some cases, returning functions as results. The outcome is clear, concise, readable, and modular code.

Anyone else at #MDBW22 still thinking about the keynote today? I don't think I want my consciousness merged with the cloud. @MongoDB https://t.co/RjmBbJ5l27
