Michele Zurakowski, chief executive officer of Beyond Hunger, has overseen the nonprofit’s significant growth during the past 17 years. She is retiring at the end of next month, leaving the nonprofit in a stronger position after weathering the Great Recession and COVID. Zurakowski joined what was then known as the Oak Park River Forest Food Pantry in 2008 as a part-time co-chair. The role was originally intended to be voluntary, but she insisted that it be a paid position.
