Ride bookings and delivery orders at Uber Technologies fell shy of expectations in the first quarter, stoking fears of slowing demand against a gloomy economic outlook. Warm and sunny weather helped lure punters to JD Wetherspoon’s pubs in the last three months, giving its founder confidence that the company will deliver a “reasonable” outcome for the year. The pub chain, known for the low prices of its ales and meals, reported a 5.6 per cent increase in like-for-like sales during the 13 weeks ending April 27, an acceleration on the 5 per cent rise for the first seven weeks of the period.

The American hotel group behind the Ritz-Carlton and Westin brands has followed its rivals in moderating its full-year outlook as it braces for slowing travel demand. Marriott International, which runs the Grosvenor House hotel in Park Lane in London, expects revenue per available room, or revpar, the key industry metric, to rise between 1.5 per cent and 3.5 per cent this year, having previously forecast growth between 2 per cent and 4 per cent.

The serviced office space provider IWG generated record sales in March, prompting an increase in returns to shareholders as it reassured markets that the fallout from President Trump’s trade war has not had a direct impact on the business. IWG, which rents out serviced office space under brands including Regus and Spaces, reported a 2 per cent increase in revenue to $1.05 billion in the three months to the end of March as it continued to cash in on the growing popularity of hybrid working.
