Jack Weber is 101 years old. He's outlived his wife, buried all of his best friends, and lived through a world war, the Great Depression, and pandemics. And yet, every morning, he wakes up with a sense of purpose and gratitude. "My attitude is 'Don't let the old man in,'" Weber said. "If you think young, you're more likely to act young."Weber embodies that mindset through his lifestyle and relationships, and he believes it's the key to his longevity.

My husband and I welcomed our second daughter in November 2012 and started house-hunting for a bigger space shortly after. Our townhouse in the DC suburbs was great for three, but would become cramped with our growing family. However, even with two full-time incomes coming in from me and my husband, we couldn't find a house in the DC area within our budget of $430,000 that didn't need major repairs. A $6,900 wellness retreat for a week in the mountains of British Columbia sounded indulgent, but I couldn't shake the feeling that something had to give. I was burned out, foggy-headed, overweight, and feeling a little unmoored. I'd recently had surgery, and while my doctor had given me the green light to return to all activities, including exercise, I was completely unmotivated to work out. My sleep was also off, and my eating habits needed an overhaul.

This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Eric Morrow, a prostate cancer survivor, US Air Force veteran, and volunteer advocate for Zero Prostate Cancer, a nonprofit focused on supporting patients and eliminating prostate cancer. It's been edited for length and clarity. I was diagnosed with prostate cancer on June 8, 2021, at 49. It was shortly before my 50th birthday. I'll admit I did not know a lot about prostate cancer then.
