Just a decade ago the City of Gulf Shores made a concerted effort to make biking around the parks, beaches and the rest of the community, a more accessible journey and a safer ride. In that sort period of time they have achieved the goals and even obtained national recognition. The City of Gulf Shores has been awarded the Silver-Level Bicycle Friendly Community designation by the League of American Bicyclists. This honor places Gulf Shores among a select group of U.S. cities committed to cycling.

The beaches of Gulf Shores have been known for many things over the years but in the past decade a national sporting event has gained prominence. Gulf Shores is set to host two major collegiate beach volleyball events this spring. The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Small College Beach Volleyball Championship will take place from April 17-19, followed by the NCAA Beach Volleyball National Championship from May 2-4 at Gulf Shores Public Beach.

GOMESA is a term many residents may not know but it is a big part of the Baldwin County budget for projects in the coastal area. In brief terms, GOMESA is the revenue sharing from gas and oil production leases in the Gulf waters. Four states; Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas entered into the pact in 2006. The revenue share can be significant each year. In 2024 the State of Alabama received $49,830,178 and the Governor distributed $4,671,961 of those funds to Baldwin County projects.

While work has already begun on a 10-foot sidewalk on the west end of Canal Road and some sidewalks have already poured, the city also has plans to put the sidewalks along Commercial Avenue. On Feb. 4, the city council will consider a contract with Thompson Engineering to provide construction inspections and administration services for $54,542 for work along the north side of Canal Road along Commercial Avenue.
