On April 14, the USDA announced it was cancelling the Partnerships for Climate-Smart Commodities (PCSC) program and renaming it the Advancing Markets for Producers (AMP) initiative with a new set of rules. Introduced under the Biden administration, the $3.1 billion PCSC program included more than 130 projects with the goal to encourage farmers to adopt conservation practices to produce climate-smart commodities. Funds for PCSC have been frozen while the Trump administration reviewed the program.

On March 31, two days before President Trump’s “Liberation Day” when he is expected to announce reciprocal tariffs on U.S. trading partners, USDA Secretary Brooke Rollins made her first official visit to Iowa. The impending tariffs and the impact on farmers were key topics that came up repeatedly as the new secretary made her way across the number one state for corn, hogs, eggs, and ethanol production and number two for soybeans.

Low commodity prices are driving interest in carbon market programs, according to Jarod Creed, owner of JC Ag Financial Services, and owner and partner of Elite Ag Insurance. That was evident at the 2025 Commodity Classic as farmers packed into the Successful Farming Main Stage to attend the panel “Finding the Right Carbon Program.” In addition to Creed, panelists included Kelly Garrett, Pete Meyer, and Kaylynn Henkenius.
