    Demonstrating how agriculture works is one of the main goals of the Old Time Cotton Picking Day, an event held each fall near Flintville, Tennessee. The 16th Annual Old Time Cotton Picking Day takes place Friday, Oct. 18, 2024, at 254 Stewarts Chapel Road in Flintville. As always, there will be signs on the main roads directing you to the farm. Come reminisce about the old way of hand picking cotton and see the way we harvest cotton today while enjoying fun, food and fellowship.

    Ever seen a giant pumpkin weighing in at over 1,000 pounds? That’s what you’ll find at the Great Pumpkin Festival and Weigh-Off. During the first weekend in October, pumpkin, watermelon and squash growers descend on the tiny town of Allardt (population 614) in Fentress County to compete for cash prizes for the biggest homegrown fruits and vegetables. The 2024 event, slated for Saturday, Oct. 5, marks the festival’s 33rd year.

    What’s that buzzing noise? If you’re in Illinois in early summer, it’s probably the sound of cicadas. A lot of them, in fact – more than any year since 1803. The periodical cicadas spend most of their lifetimes in the soil feeding on tree roots. But every 13 or 17 years, depending on the type or “brood,” they emerge for mating season. Illinois is home to five broods, and 2024 marks an emergence convergence for two of them.

NCFB Annual MeetingNorth Carolina Farm Bureau Federation’s 2023 Annual Meeting will be held in Greensboro at the Four Seasons (Joseph S. Koury) Convention Center. The meeting will commence Sunday, Dec. 3, and end Tuesday, Dec. 5.
