President Bola Tinubu has sworn in new national commissioners for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The swearing-in ceremony took place on Monday ahead of the federal executive council (FEC) meeting. The newly sworn-in INEC national commissioners include Abdulrazak Tukur, representing the north-west zone, and Sunday Aja, representing the south-east. Tinubu also swore in board members of the code of conduct bureau (CCB) at the Council Chambers of the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has announced a “total lockdown” across the south-east and parts of the south-south on May 30, 2025, in honour of its fallen heroes. A statement on Monday by Emma Powerful, IPOB spokesperson, said the date has been designated as Biafra Heroes Memorial Day, set aside to remember those who died in the struggle for Biafra’s liberation.

Chikwe Ihekweazu, the acting WHO regional director for Africa, spoke about this in his message to commemorate International Nurses Day. International Nurses Day is commemorated on May 12. The theme for 2025 is: ‘Our Nurses. Our Future. Caring for Nurses Strengthens Health Systems and Economies’.

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) says its operatives have seized banned pesticides worth N800 million during raids in four states. In a statement issued on Friday, NAFDAC said the raids were carried out in Ogun, Ondo, Osun, and Oyo states, targeting shops found to be distributing banned agrochemical products.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it does not oppose voting without a permanent voter card (PVC). In 2024, Mahmood Yakubu, the INEC chairman, proposed the use of computer-generated slips for voter accreditation during elections. Yakubu said that with the introduction of the bimodal voter accreditation system (BVAS), the use of PVC as the sole means of identification for voter accreditation on election day should be reviewed.
