    The Hawthorn Academy family has rallied around third grade teacher Maggie Licea and her 10-year-old son Jaxen Christensen, a Hawthorn student who is terminally ill. "It's a small community, but we're mighty, that's for sure," Hawthorn Academy teacher Alisha George said. Hawthorn Academy, a free public charter school, has 1,400 students between the two campuses. Colleagues and families from both the West Jordan and South Jordan campuses have donated money, gift cards and meals to the family.

    “Without PREP, I'd be a loser right now,” West Jordan High School graduate Arlen Villalba Guerrero said. “I wouldn't be very far, just the same old boring stuff, getting ready to do a job that I didn't even enjoy.”Arlen is one of 15 students graduating from high school with an Engineering Drafting and Manufacturing Technology Certificate of Completion from Salt Lake Community College through Jordan School District’s Pre-freshman Engineering Program (Jordan PREP).

    In music, forte means loud and strong. When Herriman High School Band Director Raymond Hernandez was diagnosed with stage four colon cancer at the beginning of marching band season, the community’s response was forte. “Band directors from across the state have been reaching out to me about what they can do to show support for our students or help me out with classes,” Hernandez said. “They are willing to help me find substitutes. I had people offering to cook and take me to chemotherapy.
